For some, America is not just a destination of choice, but a place of refuge. If you are unwilling or unable to return to your home country because you fear persecution on account of your race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group, you may be eligible to seek asylum in the United States.

Depending on your country of citizenship, temporary forms of protection may also be available to you. If you are eligible for a “withholding of removal,” the U.S. government’s ability to force you to return to your country of persecution may be suspended. Grant of “temporary protected status” performs the same function and provides temporary relief to nationals of certain countries that have been afflicted by war, internal strife, and in some cases, natural disasters.
